If you are planning to hike the Bass Trail, this trail
guide is indispensible, with extensive information on
desert hiking, trail landmarks, history, geology,
ecology and much more. Includes detailed maps.
We owe the South and North Bass trails to pioneer
prospector and tourism operator William Wallace Bass,
who arrived at Grand Canyon's south rim in 1885 and
constructed an intricate system of roads and trails
before his retirement in 1926. In 2004 and 2005, the
National Park Service widened and repaired most of the
dilapidated corridor and reestablished another four miles
of the historic alignment. Because both the South and
North Bass trailheads are remote, day hikes are not
recommended.
