Thousands of years ago, California condors populated many areas of the West Coast and Southwest, but by 1967 they were listed as an endangered species. In 1986 and 1987, the remaining wild population of eight birds was brought into captivity to preserve the species. Fortunately condors breed well in captivity—they have been released in the Grand Canyon area and have made great strides in regaining their place in the wild. Today, their numbers total almost 300 birds, with approx. 60 in Northern Arizona. Once more the California condor—with its magnificent wingspan of more than 9'—flies free.Condor 119, which wore the tag numbered "19", was one of the most beloved California condors in Grand Canyon National Park. Condor 119 and her mate Condor 122 parented the second condor to fledge in the Grand Canyon backcountry. Condor 119 was hatched on March 15, 1995, released May 14, 1997, and died on December 29, 2006. Lead was found in her body. Made in China. Remove tag before presenting to children under 3. Plush toy conforms to all federal and state safety regulations. Stands 11.5" tall.
