The complete geologic story of Grand Canyon and much of the North
American continent is laid out for the curious geology enthusiast to examine
along this intense route. Examples of the fascinating geologic processes that
have come to bear in the formation and erosion of Grand Canyon are visible everywhere.
The class begins its twenty-five-mile trek by descending the breathtaking
Hermit Trail.
Side hikes take the class through the nearly two-billion-year-old Vishnu
Schist along Hermit and Monument Creeks to two of the largest rapids on the
Colorado River—Hermit and Granite. These dramatic stretches of white water
afford plenty of opportunity to discuss the formation of rapids, debris flows,
and the larger role of the Colorado River in the desert Southwest.
Nights are
spent at Hermit Creek, Monument Creek, and Indian Garden Campgrounds, respectively.
The class exits the canyon via the
Bright Angel Trail.
