A familiar mantra in the often harsh expanse of the Grand Canyon is the simple phrase “water is life.” Nowhere does this maxim ring more true than in the inner canyon, where sporadic springs, streams and rain pockets sustain a high density of unique flora and fauna.
This moderate-intensity backpacking class is destined for a number of these critical water sources, allowing participants to explore their reticent biotic communities. After a brief orientation, the group will descend seven miles to picturesque Hermit Creek and its lush campground. This spring-fed stream leads to the Colorado River itself, the destination for the next day’s morning hike before relocating several miles to the east along the Tonto Trail to Monument Creek. Conversations throughout the day will focus on the ecologic and geologic wonders of both the immediate vicinity and the canyon at large; not to mention the many hardy souls who have explored, hunted, farmed and mined the grandest of canyons over the millennia. Another day hike to the Colorado River and its thundering Granite Rapid will highlight the layover day between two nights at Monument Creek Campground. A final night back at Hermit Creek Campground will precede the return to the South Rim via the Hermit Trail, revisiting a final oasis in Santa Maria Spring before the final grueling push to the top.
