A Royal Arch/South Bass loop backpack offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore a variety of unique canyon life zones, microclimates, and geologic features.
From Royal Arch to Elves Chasm, from the pothole-peppered Esplanade to the banks of the fabled Colorado River, the canyon’s intricate story awaits the hardy hiker. Students also have an opportunity to sample some of the canyon’s more rugged terrain replete with challenging waterless stretches and attention-grabbing exposure. Learning skills and techniques for successfully overcoming such obstacles-as well as Leave No Trace hiking and camping-are part of the fun. The wide variety of plants, myriad layers of rock, and occasional evidence of both prehistoric and pioneer inhabitants combine to make this hike an ideal vehicle for discussing the canyon’s rich natural and cultural history. The class begins with an orientation day, then carpools to Pasture Wash on rough but reliable roads for the eight-day adventure.
