This class follows one of the most spectacular routes in the canyon to examine the extraordinary geology of the eastern Grand Canyon. From the younger Paleozoic rocks of the rim, to the striking Grand Canyon Supergroup and on to the older precambrian basement, this route provides a cross-section of the bedrock geology of Grand Canyon.
The group will hike into the widest portion of the canyon at Tanner Rapids, just below Desert View Watchtower, and move west towards Unkar Delta and beyond, hiking out of the canyon at the head of the Upper Granite Gorge. Along the way we will discuss the geologic history of the canyon, formation of rapids and landforms, and some ideas for how the canyon may have formed, and how the region we are exploring fits into that story. In addition, this route is rich with archeological remains and the stories of pioneers and miners who ventured into the canyon a century ago, providing an exceptional example of the interplay between geology and human history.
