The Tonto Trail traverses the portion of Grand
Canyon National Park that is perhaps the richest in educational
opportunities. An exploration of the region between Red Canyon and the
Bass Trail offers a wealth of geology, history, archeology,
paleontology, and ecology in a relatively limited area.
From the mining
remains of Horseshoe Mesa and the Bass Trail area, to the seeps and
springs of Monument and Hermit Creeks, the Tonto Trail provides the
perfect vehicle to examine almost every facet of Grand Canyon natural
and cultural history.
This two-week traverse of the entire Tonto Trail
will allow various GCFI instructors to offer “short courses” in their appropriate fields of expertise, by joining the group for specific sections of the route. Christa Sadler will accompany the class the entire route, and there will usually be a second instructor along on all sections for additional instruction and logistical support. Several layover days have been built in to the course for rest and exploration purposes.
