Come explore a little-known region of the western Grand Canyon, famous for its remarkable geology, history and archeology. Whitmore Wash is even more remote than its eastern, and better known neighbor, Toroweap. However its geology is no less compelling. Remnants of massive lava flows, lava dams and perhaps even catastrophic failure of one of these dams surround this beautiful stretch of river and canyon rim.
Participants will hike a very easy stock trail to the river, and spend several days exploring ancient pictographs on the canyon walls, lava flows in spectacular shapes, a beautiful side canyon once blocked by lava, and old cowboy routes into the hills surrounding the area. This is a wonderful place to explore the interplay between geology and human history in a remote and lesser-known reach of Grand Canyon.
Come prepared for a rugged drive in from St. George, an easy backpack to the river, and everything from easy to challenging hiking in the area around Whitmore Wash.
