Descend into another world, the world of the Havasupai, where wild grapes grow green against red cliffs, and huge waterfalls plunge into turquoise pools. Explore the unique ecology, geology, and cultural history of this remote side canyon, which has been central to Havasupai culture for centuries.
After the initial ten-mile backpack along the trail from remote Hualapai Hilltop to a campsite at the foot of Havasu Falls, days will be spent hiking, swimming, and sharing the beauty of this storied locale. Participants learn about the history and ways of their host tribe and study the numerous plants, birds, and animals found in this amazingly diverse riparian drainage. Fee-based horsepacking service is available from the tribe if you choose to have your gear packed in or out of the canyon. Information about this service will be sent with pre-class materials.
