Sweeping views, ancient rocks, telltale fossils, curious critters,
diverse plants, and ancient ruins are yours to explore on this ambitious hike
for beginners. After an orientation day on the South Rim that includes a primer
on the fine art of backpacking, the class descends the scenic South Kaibab Trail
to the canyon floor. From Bright Angel Campground, our base camp for two nights,
participants will visit historic Phantom Ranch, the banks of the Colorado River,
and the sinuous slot canyon carved by Phantom Creek.
Topics will range from
raptors to rapids as you learn about this fascinating ecosystem and those who
have relied upon it over the centuries. A final night at Indian Garden Campground
and a visit to scenic Plateau Point are followed by a return to the rim via
the Bright Angel Trail.
Participants receive a complimentary Bright Angel
Trail Guide and a copy of Hiking Grand Canyon, the National Park
Service DVD on backpacking in Grand Canyon.
