This scenic journey will provide an excellent opportunity to experience a remote stretch of the canyon. The rugged Hermit Trail will give the class access to beautiful Hermit and Monument Creeks and the world-class whitewater found where they join the Colorado River.
En route to our final night at Indian Garden we will traverse a 9-mile leg of the Tonto Trail featuring Salt Creek, Dana Butte, and the imposing Abyss. The class will learn the art of route finding, minimum-impact camping, wilderness first aid, and other skills needed for traveling safely in remote areas. Geology, flora and fauna, and other topics of interest to the group will be covered on the hike as well. Because we will have to carry extra water over rugged terrain, it is essential that participants be in very good physical condition.
